พูดถึงเกี่ยวกับศัพท์บรรยายคุณค่า ราคา วันนี้เราลองมาดูศัพท์ที่บอกราคาแพง ราคาสูงกันนะครับ
คำแรกที่เราคุ้นกันมากคือ
expensive (adj) - This book is expensive.

ต่อไปเราใช้ คุณศัพท์ high, large ขยายศัพท์เกี่ยวกับราคาได้ เช่น high cost, high price
That car was auctioned off at a very high (large) price.

คำที่เราพูดถึงมาแล้วก็ใช้ในความหมายแพงได้ (แต่ศัพท์เหล่านี้จะมีเรื่องคุณค่าเข้ามาเกี่ยวข้องด้วย หม...ายถึงว่าของดีมีคุณค่า ราคาก็ต้องสูง) คือ
invaluable, priceless, valuable, inestimable

pricey, costly, dear
I just bought that rare edition of pricey Mercedes Benz.
That edition of Lord of the Ring costs me dear.
It is too costly to drive to work these days.

เมื่อวานพูดถึงคำว่า valuable : invaluable
วันนี้นึกถึงคำคล้ายๆกันในกลุ่มของคำที่บรรยายเรื่องคุณค่า ราคา
1. price แปลว่า ราคา
We just bought that cd at a very high price
คราวนี้เราใช้การเติม -less ข้างท้ายคำเพื่อทำให้มันมีความหมายในทางตรงข้าม แต่ เช่นเดียวกับ valuable ที่เราเติม in- ข้างหน้าคำ

priceless จะมีความหมายเหมือน invaluable คือมีมูลค่าไม่สามารถนับได้ มีมูลค่ามากมายมหาศาล
I have been look...ing for that priceless cd for several years.

2. cost แปลว่ามีราคา
That cd costs me 100 Baht.
แต่ costless จะแปลตามที่เราเข้าใจคือ ไม่มีราคา ไม่มีมูลค่า ฟรี ไม่เหมือน invaluable กับ priceless นะครับ
That concert tour ticket is costless to me. I got it for free.

3. value แปลว่า คุณค่า
แต่ valueless แปลว่า ไร้คุณค่า ไม่เหมือน invaluable นะครับ
That vase looks old but it is valueless because it is not authentic.

prefix in-

in- คำนำหน้า ไว้เติมหน้าคำคุณศัพท์ (adjective) ทำให้มีความหมายตรงข้าม เช่น
finite : infinite (จำกัด : ไม่จำกัด อนันต์)
definite : indefinite (เฉพาะ : ไม่เฉพาะ)
accessible : inaccessible (เข้าถึงได้ : เข้าถึงไม่ได้)
active : inactive (แข็งขัน : เฉยชา)

แต่มีอยู่หนึ่งคำที่เวลาเราเติม in- เข้าไปความหมายจะไม่เป็นความหมายตรงข้าม แต่จะทำให้ความหมายมีค่ามากยิ่งขึ้นไปอีก คำนั้นคือ
valuable แปลว่ามีค่า มี...ราคา
The gift we just received is valuable - ของขวัญที่เราเพิ่งได้รับมีค่ามาก
แต่ ถ้าเราใช้ว่า
The gift we just received is invaluable - ของขวัญที่เราเพิ่งได้รับมันประมาณค่ามิได้ มีค่ามหาศาล

ดังนั้น invaluable จึงมีค่ามากมายมหาศาล กว่าการใช้เพียงแค่ valuable

The fossils we just found is invaluable to our history study of human.

gold vs golden

gold (n) - ทองคำ โลหะมีค่า หรือ สิ่งของมีค่า
golden (adj) - มีค่า มีสีเหลืองสวยงามอย่างทอง (ไม่ได้หมายความว่าต้องเป็นทอง) มีลักษณะสวยงาม

We were given a precious gift as the gold gate. (ประตูทองคำ)
We visited the Golden Gate in San Fransisco. (สะพานแขวนที่นักท่องเที่ยวนิยมไป แต่ไม่ได้หมายความว่าทำด้วยทอง)

We call Thailand another name Suvanabhumi which means the golden land.
We call Thailand ano...ther name Suvanabhumi whcih means the land of gold.

สองประโยคให้ความหมายที่ต่างกัน ในประโยคแรกจะให้ความหมายในเชิงความสวยงาม ประเทศไทยเป็นประเทศที่สวยงาม สถานที่ท่องเที่ยวงดงาม
แต่ประโยคที่สองจะให้ความหมายว่าประเทศไทยมีทรัพยากรมีค่ามากมาย ดังคำ ในน้ำมีปลา ในนามีข้าว

I am not quite sure which above meaning exactly translates Suvanabhumi, anyone? Please share your idea.

ข่าวพาดหัวกีฬาเมื่อสัปดาห์ที่แล้ว มีสิ่งที่น่าสนใจสองอย่าง
1. In with a shout = มีโอกาสสูง (เข้าไปด้วยเสียงตะโกน) แสดงว่ามีความเป็นไปได้สูง เป็นสำนวนที่ใช้กันเยอะเวลาสมัครงาน เวลาแข่งขันกีฬา หรือ สอบแข่งขัน ลองจำไปใช้ดูได้ครับ
2. เนื่องจากเป็นข่าวพาดหัว จึงพยายามตัดกริยาช่วยที่ไม่จำเป็นออกไป ดังนั้นประโยคที่สองจึงเป็นประโยค passive voice ที่ไ...ม่มี verb to be (was)

รูปประโยคเต็มๆควรต้องเป็น De Matteo was interviewed for Chelsea job. แต่ถูกตัด was ออกไปเพื่อให้ประโยคกระชับและสั้นแต่ยังได้ใจความอยู่ ลองสังเกตุข่าวภาษาอังกฤษดูนะครับ เวลามีกริยาช่องสองอยู่ในประโยค ประโยคนั้นจะเป็น passive voice ที่ตัด verb to be ออกไปเสมอ

สำหรับคนที่ไม่ได้ตามข่าว premier leaque ของอังกฤษ De Matteo เพิ่งได้รับการแต่งตั้งให้เป็นผู้จัดการทีมชั่วคราวแทน Andreas Villa Boas ที่ทำผลงานได้แย่มาก โดยหลังจากการแต่งตั้ง De Matteo ก็ทำทีมได้อย่างยอดเยี่ยม ทำให้เชลซีกำลังจะเข้าชิงฟุตบอลแชมเปี้ยนลีก โดยเอาชนะ Barcelona ในนัดแรกไป 1-0 จึงเป็นที่มาของข่าวพาดหัวว่า De Matteo มีโอกาสที่จะได้คุมทีมต่อไปหลังจบฤดูกาลนี้
